Reading Month

We are trying to read 60 books between all of us this month. We have a chart in the classroom where we fill in the title of the book when we have read it. When we have finished the book, we leave a comment below saying:
1. The title of the book
2. The Author / Illustrator
3. A 7 sentence summary of the book (don't give away the ending!)
4. Who I would recommend this book for and why
5. Marks out of 10 and why

If you are not sure about which book to chose, check out these comments and see if any of them appeal to you. We have a similar one posted during April so you can get ideas from there too. Good Luck!

    6) Life is horrible, not worth living and when parvana's mother leaves to a taliban free city with her children to attend her daughters wedding Pavara feels alone.
    7) When word spreads that the city Mazar-e-Sharif ( town where her mother and family are staying)is invaded by the taliban, Parvana feels lost in what feels like a world where there can never be a happy ending.
Recommend: I would highly recommend this book for many reasons. One for being a book that I found harrowing and true that gave me a real insight on such a complicated chapter of history. Another being that it had a story without being like a chapter in a history Textbook. I would recommend this book for someone who would be interested in reading an unusual captivating book. The age group I would say about 11+
Marks; 8/10- This was a very good book, a great read not to be missed.
Also I found the glossary at the back extremely helpful, because I didn't understand the traditional Afghanistan terms.

    Photos : Robert Caplin
This is a book about the life of Justin Beiber some people think he is a Big star but in real life all he wants to do is settle down and make money now so in the future He can mind his mam and the rest of his family. In the book I found out he is Jewish. And that his father left him at a very young age. He was discovered by YouTube uploading videos and usher and Justin timberlake found him and ever since he has been famous. He lived with his grand parents because him and his mam couldn't afford a home and food for them selfs, It was very hard for him 2 leave them to travel the world after living there since he was a young boy.He has thousands of fans all over the world. When he became famous he found his dad but his dad only came so Justin could get him a record label with was just using him. But Justin didnt mind all he wanted was to have his dad back.

While they search for a better life (Parvanas searching for her mother) they come across horrific things like landmines, bombs and ruthless malicious soldiers.
But will there journey ever find them what they want?
Recommendation; In my opinion the previous book was a good bit better. Someone who has read the first should read this book because it really gives you a proper ending.
    11+ age group.
Rating: 7/10 ~ This story line is very similar to a book I read and disliked. Theres a bit to much walking, walking trying to find food and shelter; slightly repetetive.
Additional Note: I once again found the glossary and the background information to the war very helpful.

  8. Book: My worst best friend
    Author:Dyan Sheldon
    1) Best friends in the whole wide world Gracie and Savanna have practically the complete opposite personalities;
    2) Gracie loves the world and would do anything to save it, she also has a strong liking for lizards whereas Savanna couldn't live without a little (for beauty reasons) pollution here and there and she would rather die than so much as touch any type of lizard. But they are "soul sisters" either way.
    3) Savanna is flamboyant and talkative though her punctuality skills don't deserve a medal and Gracie admires her as she finds herself almost interesting when she was with Savanna (which was always).
    4) The two girls in school hang out with a little group of people including an eccentric almost bitter boy named Cooper.
    5) One day when Gracie was waiting for Savanna in a cafe for over 2 hours on a Saturday, Cooper sees her and asks her if she wanted to go to a "Neighbours" session which was a club for young people who taught other younger people and Gracie absolutely loved it.
    6) From no fault of Gracie's, after that particular day, Savanna and Gracie's friendship sort of started to unravel.
    7) In this book there are old friends very very slowly drifting apart and new friends forming. Gracie let Savanna pretty much walk all over her, making her keep Savanna's secretive secrets by lying to their friends time after time and Gracie's least favourite verb by far is lie and she hates making herself look a fool in front of her friends, but the thing Gracie really despises is lying to her father and when Savanna makes her do just that, she's crossed the line..
I wouldn't recommend this book to many people, it is a bit too long for such a predictable story line and there is a tedious amount of dialogue in every page.
I give this book 6/10 because there isn't enough narration but it isn't the most boring book I've ever read but it does take a considerable amount of chapters to start being a 'page turner'.

  9. Book; Mud City
    Author Deborah Ellis
Third book from the Breadwinner franchise
    Summary;
This story focuses on Parvana's friend from the first book. Since we last heard of her she was moving to Pakistan away from Taliban rule.
She had succefully done that and was staying in a refuge camp. Life is hard in those camps with thousands hungry and dying and not enough supplies. The beautiful scenery and hospitality of France is something Shauzia (Parvana's friend) would love to experience. When she escapes from the camp and decides to look after her self she realizes life on the street is hard. Begging for money and doing odd jobs doesnt produce a steady income. When a family decide to adopt her as their own she thinks she's set, shes surrived the streets. But when her kindness gets the better of her she invites beggers into their house and tries to take care of them. After this stunt Shauzia is homeless once more. Her "family" bring her back to the camp much to the dislike of Shauzia. But soon her eyes open and she discovers what is really happening and she knows the fields of france will wait for her while duty calls.
Recommendation; This book is good but not as good as the others, because it focuses on Parvana's friend not Parvana. I would recommend this to someone who has readthe two previous books to complete the trilogy.
Rating; A good book, not great becaus eit didnt live up to my expectations from the first one. 7/10.
Note; The maps proved very helpful because sometimes I didnt know where they actually were!

  11. Book: The worry website
    Author Jacqueline Wilson
    Summary:
Mr. Speed's class of thirty all have their worries and some are too embarrassing to consider confiding in the whole class and get humiliated in front of their classmates so Mr. Speed sets up what he calls the 'worry website' that only his class can access and anonymously type in their worries and other children can comment constructive ideas to help the worry go by.
Holly's worry is first in the book and she says that she hates her dad's new girlfriend but she is actually one of the kindest women in the world and Holly wishes this new girlfriend is wicked so she won't feel bad about being a complete and utter brat around her.
Claire is having a reaccuring nightmare after watching a horror film with one of her elder siblings. She doesn't know how to overcome this frightening monster and needs help is she wants to ever sleep again.
William is afraid that he cannot perform well in anything whatsoever and feels quite low and needs something to ever so slightly boost his self confidence.
Samantha's worry is that her family is slowly falling apart as her dad has left her mother for another woman and Samantha is worried and depressed and even angry.
A competition was held around the time the worry website was being written for a child to have a chapter to themselves and thousands entered but one girl won with a very talented worry.
The worries I've mentioned are only a few and the rest of them are justas good, from the start of this book till the end, Mr. Speed solves these worries in creative ways for all the children and in the end, all the worries have vanished.

Recommendatin: I recommend this book to a person who isn't mad on reading and would liked to be eased into it by starting with shorter, simpler books.
I personally loved this book, even though it's quite easy and short but I have to say reading those books all my life would drive me crazy.9/10

  38. Title; Millions
    Author; Frank Cottrell Boyce
Summary; This story is about two brothers named Anthony and Damian, Damian being the main character. One day, after the two boys have moved into their new house Damian is exploring their lot. He comes across an old railway track. At the time Ireland is changing its currency to euro. Then a big steam train rolls beside Damian and a big bag full of pounds, (going off to the factory to be burnt) falls on to Damian's lap. He excitedly brings it in to his brother Anthony where they can fantazize with their millions. Neither boy realizes but things get very complicated with everyone having a thirst for money, plus the possiblity that maybe the bag of money wasn't a gift from God but a more sinister thing. Very clever with a hint of mystery.
Recommendation; I thouroughly enjoyed this book and found myself flying through each page. It's very realistic but with a great twist, plus everyone loves to fantazise about what it would be like to have a million euro! I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to someone who just wants a good read, and to be excited with such a marvellous book!!
Rating; I give this book 10/10, I'd rarely give a book ten out of ten unless it was really good and I honestly believed it was. It was never a chore reading, no boring chapters or anything of the sort!

Henry is a very foolish boy but quite entertaining in his adventures in this book:
He tries to trick the tooth fairy
He has to cope with suffering pain of his Moody neighbour staying over for two weeks while her parents go on holidays
He ruins his pageboy suit for his cousins wedding and interupts her guests
Also he tries to get rid of his new teacher Mr.Nerdoy

This story is a very interesting novel, the reason being, it's a novel written in notes. Clarie and her mother communicate by writing notes to each other on the fridge door. Claire's Mam is very busy, she's a doctor and is always on call. Claire is very busy between school and babysitting and going out with friends. Things take a dramatic turn when Claires mother starts going to tons of doctors appointments. They write about certain things, like apoligizing for fights that happened the night before or shopping lists or dates of doctors appointments. Claire soon realizes note taking is not the best way to communictae when things get serious and time begins to run out. With a dramatic turn of events with a heart breaking conclusion this book is extremely memorable.

    Author: lemony snicket.
This book is all about three-misfortunate orphans.
When their parents die in a huge fire a friend called Mr. Poe comes to look after them until a distant relative is available to take care of them.
They are very wise children and when it comes to meeting their fortune grabbing guardian named count Olaf they must do all that they can to protect each other. And also their parents left a huge fortune.
I think this book is very misfortunate and I give it ten out of ten.

Damian, his brother Anthony and their dad live in the time of the currency change in Ireland living in their new house. One day, Damian is outside getting away from everything on his own when he prays to God for a miracle when suddenly a huge bag of old pounds falls from the sky and Damian brings it back to his older brother and they realise that the money had actually fallen from a train loaded with pounds on its way to burn them all. The brothers only have about two weeks to spend it before the euro is introduced to Irish life, the brothers are thrilled with their new fortune, buying valueable items from acquaintances at school hardly ever realising that this money could be dangerous, hardly ever realising people will get suspicious...

  68. Book: ME
Author(s): Rebecca Stevens and Steve Jeanes.
This is a quirky book about a quirky girl with a name likely to be an aspect of imagination, Carmen Amaretto del Fuego Delafonte Passionflower Poisson or Janet for "short". Janet is pretty much the main character writing about a short period of her twelve year old life but Charlie also has an opinion of this slighty obnoxious girl. The book is about Janet and Charlie and how they become friends slowly but surly learning to hate the same enemies and love the same music throughout the story. Find out how insane Charlies sister is and what happened the day Janet had to be minded by Charlie's mam by reading this book.
Recommendation: I would recommend this book to someone who like easy an enough read with not a big mysterious plot.
7/10 because it was quirky and different and slightly crazy.
